First in World?
But I don't always get it right. I asked if the NC Zoo hatching of golden white-eye might be the first in the USA.
I now understand from General Curator Ken Reinginger, whose specialty is birds, that that is possibly a world first ("captive") breeding, as well as a success within a US Fish & Wildlife Service "translocation project".
Other notable NC Zoo bird species hatched as of June 3, Ken reports, are wattled crane, turquoise tanager, blue-crowned hanging parrot, horned lark, Inca dove, red-capped cardinal, snowy-headed robin chat, red-faced liocichla (special species preservation project) and Hottentot teal.
Hooded pitta and crested wood partridge are also on eggs, he adds, giving senior keeper Debbie Zombeck credit for "doing most of the bird collection management these days".
